New Delhi/Shillong: Dr. Heipor Uni Bang, Principal and Founder of KB Memorial Secondary School, East Jaintia Hills, was conferred the prestigious National Teachers’ Award 2025 on Friday. He was among 45 outstanding educators from across India felicitated by President Droupadi Murmu at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on the occasion of Teachers’ Day.
Dr. Bang, who began his teaching career in 2009 after completing his MSc in Botany from NEHU, established KB Memorial Secondary School in 2013 to provide affordable English-medium education in the region. Under his leadership, the school has excelled not only in academics but also in sports and cultural activities, notably emerging runner-up in the State Subroto Mukherjee Cup (U-14 Boys) in both 2023 and 2025, and consistently winning district-level quizzes, debates, and essay competitions.
An accomplished scholar, Dr. Bang earned his PhD in Environmental Management from William Carey University, with a thesis on solid waste management in East Jaintia Hills. He has published research in reputed journals and authored Khasi-language textbooks up to Class IV, along with GK materials tailored to Meghalaya’s local context.
Beyond the classroom, he has contributed significantly to society, serving as a member of the Juvenile Justice Board, Khliehriat, a Red Cross Society volunteer, and as faculty at Thomas Jones Synod College, Jowai. He has also pioneered innovative learning models, including the flipped classroom approach, fostering independent learning and active engagement.
Expressing gratitude, Dr. Bang said the award was a recognition of collective effort—his family, colleagues, and the state’s education departments. He further appealed for financial support to private schools, grants-in-aid for infrastructure and teacher salaries, and the full implementation of NEP, while also urging inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule and better resources for children with special needs.
His honour is seen as a proud moment for Meghalaya, celebrating a teacher whose dedication has shaped both education and community development in the state.
