Shillong: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Chief Titosterwell Chyne said that it has been the Khasi tradition and custom to take the mother’s surname and it shall remain that way.
CEM Chyne said that it has been there since our forefathers and it is our traditional and customary duty to continue with this practice.
The Council has always disfavour the practice of khasi giving the father’s surname. Notably, the Executive Member (EM) Jambor War on April has mentioned that Khasi who takes the surname of his father, cannot be considered a Khasi since it is not as per the matrilineal system.
