Power Minister AT Mondal informed the Assembly on Monday that the state government has received ₹49.8 crore from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DONER) to upgrade the Mawlai Substation from 3×20 MVA to 3×50 MVA.
The information was provided in response to a query raised by Mawlai MLA Brighstarwell Marbaniang. Mondal stated that the total cost of the project is ₹79.23 crore, with the state government required to contribute ₹29.3 crore.
He emphasised the critical role of the Mawlai Substation, which has been operational since 1972, in supplying electricity to Shillong. To expedite the project, the government plans to invite tenders in April to begin work as soon as possible, he added.
