CM denies rumours of GNLA regrouping in Garo Hills

Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday has denied rumours on the regrouping of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in Garo Hills.

However, the Chief Minister has informed that the government will internally assess the matter. CM said that even the government are vigilant but there is nothing to worried because this is one of the many intel that the government receives from time to time.

“I haven’t seen the copy of the report but these are assessment made from time to time by different levels. This is part of an exercise normally done. “I am not saying that we are worried by as a government, we don’t take anything likely,” he added.

On May 13, media reports a confidential letter surfaced revealed that the GNLA militants, who have been inactive for several years, are regrouping again.

According to a leaked secret letter dated May 11, 2023 by Dy Superintendent of Police (DSB) of West Garo Hills, Tura, meetings are being conducted in various places in Garo Hills such as Jadi, Nongal, and Chalang to mobilize the youth to join the outfit.

The letter, that has been leaked on social media and is going viral, claims that nearly 500 youth have already been recruited and are being sent to Nagaland and Burma to pursue basic training courses. It is also suspected that some prominent businessmen are aiding the outfit to regroup.
