Shillong: Meghalaya Disaster Management Minister Lahkmen Rymbui has said that the department is fully prepared to respond to any natural calamity that may strike the state.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Rymbui said district authorities across Meghalaya have been empowered to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautionary measures to safeguard the public from any potential threat posed by natural disasters.
He added that with the advancement of technology, authorities can now receive early warnings about storms, heavy rainfall, and other adverse weather conditions, enabling them to take timely action and minimise risks.
His remarks come after the East Khasi Hills district administration issued an advisory warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain, and lightning over the next five days, from April 27 to May 1. Residents have been urged to exercise caution, avoid venturing near rivers and vulnerable areas, and take necessary steps to protect life and property.
On the ongoing Shillong-Pynursla-Dawki road construction, Rymbui said he was pleased that the government has taken the recent incidents seriously, particularly following the loss of lives in recent days. He expressed hope that, through close coordination between the government, the executing company, and the public, such unfortunate incidents can be prevented in the future.
