HEADLINES

The National People’s Party received a major boost in Umroi Constituency on Saturday as former UDP MDC candidate Naphishisha Marwein, along with hundreds of supporters and party workers, formally joined the NPP.

The induction programme was held at Dwar Ksuid, Umroi Nongrah, where Naphishisha Marwein and UDP Umroi President Vincent Nianglang led a large group of UDP members and supporters into the NPP fold.

The new entrants were welcomed by NPP Umroi Block President Damanbait Lamare, Chief Adviser Ngaitlang Dhar, Secretary R.R. Kharbuhki, and General Secretary of the NPYF Meghalaya State Unit, Pynhun Rynghang, among other party leaders.

Naphishisha Marwein, who contested the 2025 MDC election from Umroi Constituency under the UDP banner, had officially joined the NPP on February 27, 2026. Addressing the gathering, she said that despite her electoral defeat, she continued to work for the welfare and development of the constituency.

She stated that concerns regarding the development needs of Umroi Constituency played a major role in her decision to join the NPP along with her supporters.

Marwein further claimed that a significant number of UDP office bearers, leaders and supporters from Umroi had shifted allegiance to the NPP. According to her, following the mass exodus, only the Secretary remains in the UDP’s Umroi unit, while most of its leadership and members have joined the National People’s Party.
