Upgate, Nongpoh Residents Crack Down on Illegal Liquor Trade, Seize 246 Packets of Local Liquor

HEADLINES

A joint operation conducted by the Upgate Committee, village watchdog groups, women’s organisations, youth groups and personnel from Nongpoh Police Station led to the seizure of 246 packets of locally brewed liquor during a crackdown on illegal liquor sales in Upgate, Nongpoh.

According to information gathered, individuals involved in the illegal liquor trade were reportedly selling liquor from auto-rickshaws and scooters along the roadside, including on Sundays. Residents alleged that such activities were tarnishing the image of the locality and creating concerns over public safety, particularly for churchgoers and commuters.

The operation followed a strict warning issued earlier by the Upgate Committee against the sale of illegal liquor within the locality. During the raid, authorities recovered 246 plastic packets of locally brewed liquor, all of which were subsequently destroyed on the spot.

Speaking to the media, Upgate Headman Bah Albinus Lamo said the committee has consistently worked to maintain cleanliness, peace and the dignity of the locality. However, he expressed concern that some individuals continue to violate community regulations and engage in activities that negatively affect the area.

Lamo issued a stern warning to those involved in the illegal liquor trade, stating that the latest action should be treated as a final warning. He said anyone found continuing such activities would face heavy fines and other penalties in accordance with community rules and regulations.
