Shillong, October 14: East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal has announced that Durga Puja pandals occupying portions of Public Works Department (PWD) roads will not be permitted from next year, citing traffic congestion and inconvenience to the public.
Speaking on Wednesday, Baranwal said the district administration had allowed existing pandals to remain at their present locations this year, as shifting them at this stage would have created practical difficulties for the organisers.
However, he made it clear that such arrangements would not be permitted in the future, particularly where temporary structures obstruct public roads and disrupt traffic movement.
The Deputy Commissioner said Puja committees, especially the RR Colony Puja Committee, had been advised to identify alternative locations for organising their celebrations next year.
He emphasised the need to ensure that religious and cultural celebrations do not cause unnecessary inconvenience to commuters and residents.
To address traffic-related concerns during the festivities, Baranwal said sector magistrates had been instructed to coordinate closely with local dorbars and police personnel to minimise disruptions and ensure smoother traffic movement.
The Deputy Commissioner also clarified concerns regarding undertakings sought from Durga Puja organisers.
He explained that obtaining such undertakings is a standard administrative procedure and does not automatically make organisers responsible for incidents or circumstances beyond their control.
The district administration’s decision is aimed at ensuring better traffic management and public convenience during future Durga Puja celebrations, while allowing organisers sufficient time to make alternative arrangements.
