UDP withdraws support from NPP-led MDA-II Government

Share

Shillong: The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Tuesday decided to withdraw from the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA-II) government led by the National People’s Party (NPP).

UDP East Khasi Hills District president and Sohra MDC Titosstarwell Chyne informed reporters that the decision was taken during a meeting attended by party office-bearers from across the districts.

He said the meeting deliberated on several issues, including the party’s decision to withdraw from the MDA-II government and the resignation of UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh as a Cabinet minister.

Explaining the party’s decision, Chyne said the UDP no longer saw any reason to continue its alliance with the NPP, given that the ruling party already enjoys a majority of 36 MLAs.

He maintained that with the NPP having sufficient numbers to run the government, there was little justification for the UDP to remain part of the ruling coalition.
