25 VILLAGES PROTEST AGAINST KULSI HYDRO-ELECTRIC PROJECT, PETITIONS TO BE SENT TO THE TWO CMS

SHILLONG, February 02: The citizens of Meghalaya and Assam held a public meeting in Kynshai Ground in West Khasi Hills District and in the meeting took the decision to oppose the Kulsi Hydro Project proposed to be undertaken by the Brahmaputra Board.

In the meeting held on Tuesday, the local residents took the decision to send petitions to the two Chief Ministers of Meghalaya and Assam to demand the scrapping off of the proposal for a hydroelectric power project by constructing a dam around Wah Khri or the Khri river.

The protest of the people in the Langpih area from Meghalaya and Assam is over the fear that if the dam is constructed, 25 villages in the area in the two states will have to be submerged underwater.

The public meeting held at Kyrshai was called by the village Sordars from the area and in this meeting, former MLA of Rambrai-Jyrngam, K.P Pangniang along with the public took the decision to outrightly refuse the proposal of the Brahmaputra Board to compensate all expenses incurred and to strongly urge upon the two Chief Ministers of Meghalaya and Assam to scrap off the location from the proposal to generate hydro-electric power.

The villages that will be affected as per the report from the DC’s Office of West Khasi Hills District are Doledonga, Talimara, Mawdongkop, Dorkinuli, Mekahmidol, Warigro, Umthali, Hasem, Umbah, Dariphang, Umdiangsiar, Umdiangthing, Sarupani, Barigoan, Ukiam, Borjhar, Cikadonga, Malangoan, Krishnapur, Kapili, Matunggoan, Srigoqn, Nongspung, Kyrshai, Rajabalu.

As per the report of the inspection conducted by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills District, there are 766 houses in the 25 villages with a population of 4,666 people and the protest against the proposal has been going on from 2019.
