Today, various pressure groups, including the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO), Jaintia Women Council, Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), and others, voiced their strong opposition to the public hearing held for granting clearance to MeghaTop Pvt. Limited. The company is seeking permission to set up a cement plant in Wahiajer, Elaka Narpuh, East Jaintia Hills.
Volunteers from the local village were stationed around 1 km from the public hearing venue to monitor the gathering. The public hearing saw a turnout of concerned citizens, expressing their apprehensions about the environmental impact and the potential consequences for the local community if the cement plant is established. The protesters emphasized the need to consider the environmental and health implications before any final decision is made.
