Lumpongdeng to be beautified like Wards Lake, not destroyed | Govt open to dialogue: Prestone

HEADLINES

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Monday said there is no reason for concern over the government’s plan to develop a Taj Resort at Lumpongdeng, asserting that all works will be carried out strictly in accordance with the law, including the Environment Act and other mandatory provisions related to water and wetland conservation.

Responding to the ongoing hunger strike protest by the chairman of the Green Tech Foundation, Prestone said he appreciates the concerns raised by the youth. However, he reiterated that the government has already made it clear that no permanent construction will be allowed on the site.

Instead, he said, the aim is to enhance and beautify the area in the same way as Wards Lake, while preserving its existing natural charm.

Citing an example, Prestone recalled the initial opposition during the construction of the four-lane road from Jingkieng Umshyrpi to Pomlum, when concerns were raised that the project would harm the environment, even leading to a PIL being filed in the High Court. He pointed out that now, after the road’s completion, the government has begun plans to replant trees along the stretch.

Further clarifying the proposed development at Lumpongdeng, the Deputy Chief Minister assured that, in view of the concerns expressed by the youth and the general public, the government will ensure that there is no destruction of the forest area. Rather, he said, efforts will focus on improving and further beautifying the site.

According to Tynsong, tourists will be allowed to visit the Lumpongdeng site only once a year.

On the continued protest and hunger strike by the Green Tech Foundation chairman, he said the government’s doors remain open for discussions with those seeking further clarification on the issue.
