Almost 40 illegal households settled at Mahadev Khola : KSU findings

Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Laban Circle along with the Forest and Environment department in the presence of the police carried a joint inspection of Mahadev Khola, Lower Lawsohtun and found almost 40 non-tribal families illegally settled in the temple area.

In the joint inspection, it is also found that there are many illegal shops owned by a non-tribal without having any valid and proper document.

Notably, on July 5 the KSU have submitted a petition before Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of East Khasi Hills over alleged illegal settlers at this hindu temple area.

The KSU through RTI findings have stated that the Forest department had given the said plot for constructing the Hindu Temple in the early 1920s. However, it was clearly mentioned that the land should not be used for any other purpose, said the KSU.

Earlier, the KSU members before submitting of the petition to the DFO of East Khasi Hills had an carried out spot inspection and detected that it had turned into a habitation in violation of the lease conditions.
