Shillong, September 12: The Taxation Minister of Meghalaya, James P.K Sangma said that the establishment of casinos is to raise the tax collection of the Government. He said that even though Meghalaya is rich in Tourism, other states have also done well in attracting tourists which also made the Meghalaya Government wish to attract rich and wealthy tourists.
James Sangma touted the Government in the discussion tabled by the Chief Whip of the Opposition who is the MLA of Umroi, George B.Lyngdoh on the opposition of the JAC from Ri-Bhoi to the plan of the Government to establish the casinos.
James Sangma said that gambling has been present in the State for many many years even before it was recognised, and also said that the casinos are not at all meant for the locals of Meghalaya, and regulations have also been put in place as per the Meghalaya Regulations of Gaming Acts and Rules, 2021.
