Government School results are bad because children are sent to Government schools only when no other option left: Rymbui

HEADLINES

SHILLONG, June 14 : The Minister incharge of the Department of Education in Meghalaya, Lahkmen Rymbui expressed that it is good that students studying in private schools have done well in the recently announced SSLC examination results.

He said that the pass percentage in Government schools is satisfactory but he also expressed sadness that the pass percentage is only satisfactory because the teachers in Government schools are better trained and are also paid a much higher salary.

He said that the claim about Government schools not being up to par is because once they pass they go seek admissions in bigger schools and keep Government schools as a last option and this is not good. He said that changing this is not the responsibility of only the Government but all the stakeholders as well.

With regards to the 50% pass percentage and the lower numbers of those passing the examination from Garo Hills, Rymbui said that this year the students have tried to do their best, but in parts of Garo Hills it is still very low, and perhaps something has to be done to increase the pass percentage in this area, and much will depend on the school administration, the teachers and students.
