Imphal: Four suspected members of the United Kuki National Army (UKNA) were killed in a fierce gunfight with security personnel at Khanpi village in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Tuesday morning, police and army officials confirmed.
The UKNA, a Kuki armed group, is not a signatory to the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement — a ceasefire pact between the Union government, the Manipur government, and two major Kuki conglomerates, the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and the United People’s Front (UPF).
The SoO agreement, which had lapsed in February 2024, was renewed on September 3 after weeks of negotiation. Security forces have been maintaining heightened alert across the region amid rising tensions between armed groups in Manipur’s hill districts.
Authorities said the situation remains tense but under control as additional reinforcements have been deployed to prevent further escalation.
