Retired IPS officer and BJP Meghalaya Chief Spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang has alerted the public about a fake Facebook account created in his name, allegedly being used to seek WhatsApp numbers, solicit monetary favours and promote unsolicited sales.
Kharkrang said the latest incident was the fourth such instance involving the creation of a fake Facebook account in his name.
In a statement, he clarified that he does not ask people for their WhatsApp numbers through Facebook and has no requirement to use his personal Facebook account for business transactions.
He also stated that he does not have any personal business establishment and never asks anyone for monetary assistance.
Kharkrang urged people to report to the nearest police station any suspicious request for WhatsApp numbers or money purportedly made through his Facebook account.
He further informed that he has already lodged an FIR with the police in connection with the matter.
Appealing for public vigilance, Kharkrang said alertness among people would help curb such fraudulent activities and assist in addressing the issue.
