Mawsynram: A husband and wife who were reported missing from Nongjri Market in South West Khasi Hills District have been found dead, with police launching an enquiry to ascertain the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
According to police information, an FIR was received at Mawsynram Police Station on September 28 regarding the disappearance of Aijingsuk Kharbani and her husband, Kop Lapang. The couple had reportedly gone missing from Nongjri Market at around 3 pm on September 26 and had not returned home.
The matter was subsequently communicated to the Officer-in-Charge of Nonghyllam Police Station, following which a search was conducted in the Nongjri area. However, the couple could not initially be located.
At around 1 pm on September 29, police received information from villagers that two unidentified bodies had been found at Nongjri village. After relatives arrived at the scene, the deceased were identified as Kop Lapang, 32, son of Well Shylla and a resident of Um Shaw village in Ri Bhoi District, and Aijingsuk Kharbani, 23, daughter of Drasing Wahlang of Pungkung village in East Khasi Hills.
Due to the decomposed condition of the bodies, an on-the-spot post-mortem examination was conducted on the morning of September 30, after which the bodies were handed over to their relatives.
Police said further enquiry is underway to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the couple’s deaths. The cause of death has not yet been stated.
