Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh has reiterated that Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has made it clear that the railway project to bring rail connectivity to Meghalaya has been scrapped.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Lyngdoh said the CM had categorically stated that the proposed railway line up to Byrnihat has been withdrawn.

Regarding the proposal to extend railway connectivity to Jaintia Hills, he acknowledged that opinions on the matter are divided, with some supporting it and others opposing it. He assured that the government will carefully examine the situation, balancing the need for development with the protection of indigenous communities.

At the same time, Lyngdoh emphasized that the government is focused on improving road infrastructure to boost tourism in the state. However, he clarified that railway connectivity is not currently a priority in his agenda.
