Shillong: A woman undergoing treatment at North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences has reportedly suffered severe swelling in her right hand following an alleged improper injection administered by a male nurse in the Emergency ward, drawing strong protest from the Hynñiewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM).
According to a family member, the woman, a resident of Mawlai Mawïong, was brought to NEIGRIHMS on April 18 for treatment. At the Emergency unit, after blood samples were taken, a male nurse allegedly attempted to administer an injection multiple times on her right hand and left the needle in place, leading to swelling. The patient reportedly requested that the injection be administered on the other hand, but was ignored.
The family stated that the patient was discharged the same day due to a bereavement but had to be readmitted the following day on medical advice after her condition worsened.
They further alleged that some fingers of the affected hand have since lost function and doctors had suggested amputation. The family has not consented, as the patient is still able to move the hand and treatment is currently ongoing.
During a visit by HANM members, the Medical Superintendent reportedly informed them that the condition remains treatable and the hand may recover.
The family has demanded strict action against the nurse, alleging negligence and medical misconduct.
Following the complaint, HANM’s East Khasi Hills unit, along with members of its central body, visited the hospital and met the Medical Superintendent, expressing strong dissatisfaction over the incident.
