KHNAM alleges bias & irregularities in recruitment at Meghalaya Secretariat

Shillong: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has alleged serious irregularities and bias in the recruitment of peons and casual workers at the Meghalaya Secretariat, urging immediate corrective measures.

The issue was raised by KHNAM leader Thomas Passah following a meeting with the Chief Secretary at his office. Speaking to the media after the meeting, Passah claimed that established recruitment rules and procedures are not being properly followed.

He cited instances where around 31 regular posts and 238 casual vacancies, particularly for peons, were reportedly filled without adhering to due process or maintaining transparency. According to KHNAM, appointments have continued without proper scrutiny or compliance with laid-down norms.

The party also alleged discriminatory practices, stating that while some workers continue to be repeatedly engaged, others—including those with years of service—have been sidelined. It further claimed that some workers who staged protests were subsequently removed from their jobs.

KHNAM argued that such workers are entitled to inclusion under the Regular Casual Worker Scheme, 1996, but are being denied due recognition.

Raising further concern, the party alleged that hundreds of daily wage workers were engaged without public advertisement or open verification, indicating a lack of fair recruitment practices. It claimed that such appointments were made at the discretion of those in authority, depriving deserving candidates of opportunities.

KHNAM has called for an immediate halt to such recruitment practices, warning that failure to act could erode public trust in the functioning of the government.
