The Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Agatha K. Sangma, said that only through the collective responsibility of everyone—including the government and the community as a whole—can a safe place for children in society be created.
It is noted that the former Member of Parliament (MP) of Tura was appointed as Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights on September 9, but due to health issues, she officially joined the post on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters, the newly appointed Chairperson said she is very excited to take on the position, as “children” are her favorite people in the world.
“I am excited because I realize there is so much that needs to be done…there is a lot of work that has been done by the Commission, and it is very commendable. I just hope that somehow I will be able to add some value, something good to the Commission,” said Sangma.
On her first day in office, Sangma met with the Minister in charge of Social Welfare, Paul Lyngdoh, to discuss various issues pertaining to the Commission.
Sangma stressed the importance of safeguarding children’s safety, stating that more cases of crimes against children have been reported as family members and victims raise greater awareness.
She asserted that there are many provisions that help child victims obtain justice, and it is the duty of the Commission to assist in that process.
Additionally, the new Chairperson urged that as a community, we should be more open and sensitized and strive to become a more holistic community alongside the Commission to create a safer place for children in society.
“Our community, the family, the teachers—everyone should spread awareness and work collectively to ensure our children have a safer place to live,” she added.
Furthermore, Sangma informed that the Commission will write to the government to recommend the establishment of a fast-track court for crimes committed against children.
