HEADLINES

SHILLONG, February 24: The Chief Whip of the Opposition and also MLA of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) party, George B.Lyngdoh appreciated and praised the High Court of Meghalaya for taking due notice and intervention in the illegal coal mining and trade of coal in Meghalaya.

He said that it is about time the High Court intervenes in this matter as the people want to know the truth and added that besides illegal coal mining, the High Court should have also ordered an inquiry on the black money collected from illegal coal trade.

The High Court of Meghalaya yesterday issued an order to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police to furnish a report within 7 days on the FIR filed by the Nokma of Nengchigen in which it has been alleged that illegal coal mining is being carried out in the clan property in West Khasi Hills District.

On the other hand, in a rebuttal to the statement of the State President of the NPP, Dr.W.R.Kharlukhi in which he said that the AITC should file an FIR on the allegations of illegal coal mining being present, Lyngdoh said that as leaders, it is their duty to express the dangers that awaits the state. He said that what is the point for public representatives to also file an FIR when there are FIRs that have already been filed by civilians and filed also through the Suo Moto FIR as per the MMDR Act against illegal coal trade. The leader of the AITC said that the Government is trying to cover up all illegal activities that have taken place since this Government took charge.
