Shillong : The eight UDP MLAs who held discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and senior BJP leaders have warned the BJP against reneging on commitments made in connection with their demands.
Speaking at a public meeting in Byndihati, the Khliehriat MLA said the eight MLAs had agreed in principle to join the BJP, which would take the party’s strength in the Meghalaya Assembly to 10, including its two existing MLAs.
However, he said they had made it clear that they could collectively leave the BJP if the party failed to honour its commitments after their induction.
He said Amit Shah had asked them to complete the joining process in Delhi within three to four days, but they declined, choosing instead to continue discussions on their demands.
The MLA said repeated meetings with BJP leaders, including Sambit Patra and Himanta Biswa Sarma, resulted in assurances that work on their demands would begin after they joined the party and that key issues would be addressed before the next Assembly election.
Among the demands, four demands should be met before the election, he said, which including lifting the ban on coal mining, inclusion of Khasi in the Eighth Schedule, implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), and relocation of residents from Harijan Colony, or Them Metor.
