Shillong: Deputy Chief Minister and state NPP president Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday dismissed calls for a Khasi Chief Minister, stating that ethnic considerations should not overshadow the state’s development priorities.
“I don’t want to be Chief Minister, and I don’t see any reason to communalise the issue,” Tynsong told reporters, responding to queries about the growing demand for a Khasi leader to head the state government.
He stressed that political debates should remain focused on the welfare and progress of Meghalaya rather than personal ambition or community identity. “What matters most is the development and interests of the state. I don’t mind who becomes Chief Minister, as long as it serves the people of Meghalaya,” he added.
Tynsong also cautioned against involving outsiders in the state’s leadership, saying, “If you propose someone from West Bengal, Assam, or even Bangladesh as Chief Minister, I am strongly against it.”
His remarks come amid renewed calls from certain pressure group for a Khasi head of government, highlighting the continuing discussion around representation and political leadership in Meghalaya.
