Two Killed in Suspected Dynamite Blast at Illegal Coal Mine in East Jaintia Hills

HEADLINES

Khliehriat/Shillong: Two persons have reportedly died following a suspected dynamite explosion at an illegal coal mine in Thangsko village, East Jaintia Hills. The incident, which surfaced through delayed reports, is said to have taken place on December 23 and also left several others injured.

Sources said one of the deceased — believed to be a Bangladeshi national — died on the same day. Another victim, identified as Ashok Tamang, succumbed to his injuries on January 1 at Shillong Civil Hospital, where he had been admitted to the surgical ward.

Officials have yet to confirm full details, but local sources allege that the area — described as “sorkari” land — is used for illegal coal extraction by multiple claimants who reportedly employ Bangladeshi labourers. It is feared that some of the injured, believed to be foreign nationals, may have been sent back across the border to avoid detection.

Videos purportedly from the site indicate that many of the injured suffered severe burn injuries to the face, back and neck.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement as investigations into the incident continue.
