Nongpoh: Ri Bhoi Police have successfully defused a live Improvised Explosive Device (IED) that was found inside an abandoned bag at a residential home in Umsning on Saturday evening.
At around 7:30 PM, residents noticed an unattended bag and alerted the police. Acting swiftly, Ri Bhoi Police secured the area and called in the Special Bomb Squad from Shillong, which rushed to the scene.
The bomb squad confirmed the presence of a live IED and safely defused it after a detailed examination. The device was later taken to the Umsning Police Outpost for further investigation.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) V.S. Rathore said the quick coordination between the police and bomb squad ensured the situation was brought under control.
He further stated that miscreants had planted the explosive in the residential area.
The SP added that a suspect has been identified and efforts are underway to apprehend the individual.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the motive behind the act.
