Raipur Lawyer Files Complaint Against Shillong Police Over “Defamatory” ATR

HEADLINES

Shillong/Patna: A Raipur-based lawyer, Fayzan Khan, has lodged a complaint against the Shillong Police, accusing them of defaming him in an Action Taken Report (ATR) submitted to the National Commission for Women (NCW) last month.

In his complaint to the Superintendent of Police, Patna, Khan alleged that the ATR falsely claimed he was engaged by the family of Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi.

Calling the allegations “false, baseless, and defamatory,” Khan clarified that he never approached the family to represent Sonam. Instead, he said a police officer at Phulwari Police Station, Patna, where Sonam was kept during her transit remand, informed him of her condition. Out of “humanitarian concern,” he spoke with Sonam’s brother, who denied needing legal assistance.

Khan argued that his professional duty as an advocate is to extend legal support within the ambit of law, and portraying such actions as misconduct was intended to “tarnish his professional reputation.”

He further alleged that instead of addressing the core issues he raised in his original complaint—particularly the illegal arrest of a woman at night and “deficiencies in her medico-legal examination” on June 9, 2025—the Shillong Police attempted to divert attention by making fabricated claims against him.

“This act not only violates my reputation as an advocate but also obstructs justice,” Khan said.
