Shillong: In response to reports of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) expanding its presence to Garo Hills, National People’s Party (NPP) leader and Minister Rakkam A. Sangma acknowledged that the VPP could have a chance, especially given its recent success in the recent MP election.
However, he noted that the ultimate decision lies with the voters and the selection of the right candidate.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Sangma welcomed the expansion of other state parties to Garo Hills noting that it helps eliminate regional stereotypes.
He cited the NPP as an example, once labeled as a “Garo Party,” which expanded its reach in the entire state and now has become a National party with influence in states like Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur.
According to him, such growth and expansion of state parties will reduce divisions and foster unity.
He added that the Garo people have a positive outlook, focusing less on regional divisions and more on the quality of political candidates.
But however, Sangma reiterated that the success of any party depends on its leadership and how it resonates with the people.
When asked about the VPP’s acceptance in Garo Hills, Sangma remarked that the decision ultimately rests with the people of the region.
