SHILLONG | 2nd September 2024: Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, today, attended the felicitation ceremony of the Nongjri Presbyterian Secondary School from Meghalaya who had recently won the Subroto Cup 2024 in the U-15 Boys at the ASC Center, Bengaluru. The event was graced by the presence of the Chief Guest, Shri CH Vijayashankar, Hon’ble Governor of Meghalaya, Shri S Warjri, Minister Sports and Youth Affairs, Meghalaya and Charles Marngar, MLA, Mawhati and other government officials.
Chief Guest, Shri CH Vijayashankar, Hon’ble Governor of Meghalaya, in his speech said, “Since I am also a sports person I can identify with these young players. To win in this prestigious tournament is not something to be taken lightly. I believe that the best time for learning for any child is between the age of 6 to 16, with this in mind, it is indeed inspiring to see excellence at this age. ”
The governor also commended the efforts of the state government for supporting the team to be able to win the tournament. He further urged the government to also continue the efforts to promote sports as the youth are one of the most important assets of the state.
In his opening remarks, Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, said, “This is a touching and emotional moment. It is a kind, generous and thoughtful gesture of the Governor and I do not remember any governor who has felicitated such a program for Sports and I thank him for this initiative.”
Speaking about the initiatives that the government to improve Sports, the Chief Minister emphasised that the government has invested immensely in Sports infrastructure more in the last few years. He also said that the present government has been able to organise three of the five Meghalaya Games. He further said that various sports associations in different disciplines were also given financial assistance to improve and manage sports.
In conclusion he said, “When asked about the results and metrics to gauge the improvement of sports and also about the large investment towards support and infrastructure in sports, I say that the character and discipline that is imbibed and developed towards the youth through various sports disciplines is the most satisfying result. The biggest takeaway was when I heard the speech of the team manager and Charles Marngar, I was delighted to hear that the boys were determined to win despite the odds of challenging practice infrastructure. I would definitely help to develop infrastructure in the interim process from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund while waiting to set up a proper facility in the area.”
