Conrad Sangma Hears New Proposal on Scientific Coal Mining

HEADLINES

A delegation of the State Co-Ordination Committee of Coal Owners, Miners, Exporters, Transporters and Dealers Forum, including members from Garo Hills, met Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday to discuss the future of coal mining in Meghalaya.

Speaking to the media, Dr. P. Nongtdu said the delegation submitted a proposal for a Special Legal Framework to regulate small-scale scientific underground coal mining.

According to him, the Chief Minister welcomed the proposal and informed the delegation that the state government is already exploring ways to facilitate coal mining within the legal framework.

Dr. Nongtdu also thanked the government for allowing coal mining to resume in 2025 but said the existing system was not fully suited to Meghalaya’s terrain and mining conditions.

The proposal will now be examined by the concerned department to study the legal provisions required for its implementation.
