SHILLONG, February 28: The United Democratic Party (UDP) Youth Wing, has renewed the youth leaders of the party under the leadership of Kyrmen Shylla as the new President along with other office bearers in the Executive Committee.
Speaking with media persons, Shylla said that this new group of youths will have its first meeting on the 7th of March to discuss on measures to be undertaken to strengthen the party for the 2023 Assembly Elections.
He said that the State now needs to be governed by regional parties while inviting the cooperation of the public in the Assembly Election to be held in the coming year.
On being asked about the alliance with the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) under the Regional Democratic Alliance, he said that when it comes to working together with other parties, the youths cannot take a decision but they will give a suggestion to the Central Executive Committee to ensure there is no clash in fielding candidates or on any other matter.
Responding to more queries, he said that the UDP is the only party with the most number of youth leaders who are also elected MLAs and also stated that the party will work harder to produce more and more youths as representatives in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
With regards to the exit of party leaders to join other non-regional parties, Shylla said that the leaders who have exited should have stayed with the regional parties and their joining other non-regional parties is a weakness on the part of the individuals concerned. He said that invitations are extended to many but if the leaders are weak and they end up taking a wrong decision, then it’s a mistake on the part of that individual.
Shylla further stated that the youths from their end will try to speak again with many leaders who have exited to come back to the party so that a larger victory is assured for the party to better safeguard our indigenous identity.
