Shillong: Sofie Balarisha Rangtong, a Class IX student from Little Flower School, Malki, secured the runner-up prize at the National Science Seminar 2023, held at the National Science Centre in New Delhi on October 12.

The seminar was conducted by the National Council of Science Museums (N.C.S.M.), under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, in collaboration with all States/Union Territories.

Sofie was also granted a scholarship of Rs 2000 per month for a duration of 2 years.

She was chosen to represent Meghalaya due to her first-place victory at the State National Seminar earlier in the year.

Speaking to reporters about her accomplishment on Monday, Sofie expressed her gratitude to the National Science Centre for providing a platform for students like her to represent their state.

She added that the experience was incredible, allowing her to acquire knowledge beyond what’s covered in the syllabus.

“I am also thrilled to have brought pride to both my school and my state,” Sofie remarked.

The aspiring cardiologist, a Class IX student at Little Flower School, also shared her appreciation for her teacher, Joydeep Das, for selecting her to represent the school at both the district and state level seminars.

Sr. Meris Dkhar, the Headmistress of Little Flower School, hailed Sofie’s achievement as a moment of great pride for everyone.

She recounted how it all began with an invitation from the office of the District School Education Officer (DSEO), urging the school to participate in the district science seminar.

Sr. Dkhar noted that Sofie was chosen after securing first place in both the district and state science seminars.

Joydeep Das, a teacher at Little Flower School, informed that the topic of the National Science Seminar was “Millets – A Super Food or a Diet Fad”.

He mentioned that the preparation for this began months in advance, starting with a competition among the six selected students at the school level.
