HEADLINES

Shillong: A detailed discussion was held on the subject of decongesting of Shillong city in the third day of the Budget session, Voice of the People Party (VPP) Chief Ardent Miller Basawiamoit has suggested the State government to stop issuing NOC and Permission for establishing of schools in the city.

“Stop issuing NOC for school establishment within Shillong area that will also add in solving the problem of traffic congestion in the city”, said Ardent in the floor of the house on Wednesday.

However, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma replied that the government have taken note and has already come up with STEMS – Sustainable Transport and Efficient Mobility Society programs – shared school buses services with hope that it will help to minimise traffic congestion in Shillong.

“There are ways, maybe of the suggestion of the member(Ardent) is also one of the solution. However, we need to realise that education is also important and we don’t have schools coming up based on the population demographic”, said CM Conrad.

The CM stated that has to balance things out, Education is very crucial for the children and having schools who are easily accessible to the people is very important.

He further stated that the permission for establishing of schools in the city will be much stricter providing that they have proper parking spaces and other conditions.

“We can explore all those issues but simple saying we will not allow schools within Shillong in certain areas may not be the most prudent way to move forward, Education is important”, said Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.

He further added that the government will examine more on the matter so as overall interest of the state and the people in mind before taking any decision.
