Ri Bhoi: Concern over the breach of the status quo and the illegal encroachment of the Assam government by constructing road at the areas of differences which falls under the settlement of boundary between Meghalaya and Assam, on Wednesday the Joint Action Committee of the Khun Ki Hajar Hima Sohiong lodged the complaints at the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi District against the illegal construction of road at Nongwah Mawtamur by Assam government.
As mentioned at the memorandum lodged by the JAC of the Hima Sohiong, it is mentioned that, Nongwah- Mawtamur falls under Hima Sohiong since 1874 which was then called the Hima Nongwah Mawtamur (Nongwah Mawtamur State) and the boundary, and villages of Nongwah-Mawtamur includes East Hima Mylliem Old Tesku, New Tesku, Umsohpai, Umlaniang, Um Sarang, Karbalu, Pilangkata, Nongspung, Larmati and Lum langmai. West-Hima Jirang and Hima Nongspung- Nongwah Mawlein, Wah Synon, Umjerkew, Umsaliang Umshru, Kurlong, Gonpati, Umring and Umtyrlet.
It also mentioned that, in North Kamrup District- Pilangku ‘A’, Pilangku ‘B’, Um Lathu, Umsen, Umjong, Pangker ‘A’, Pangker ‘B’, Pangker C’, Nongsohmylleng, Mawtyngkong, Damupahon, Nongtariah, Jalut, Paham, Kyntem Nongmalieh, Gorobhanga Rim, Gorobhanga Thymmai, Bal Pahamjula, Garogulit, Ranigate, Gulbaria, Accoland Area, Curchuk, Nagrabil, Lokhra, Wahummariong, Umtyrnga, Ullubari, and Beltola, while, in South Hima Khatsaw-Phra Hima Nongkhlaw – Lailad Rim, Jalithem, Jalilum, Nongladew, Birthem, Birlum, Umsong, Mawpnar and Nongwah Mawtamur.
The JAC led by Purning Star Shabong as the Chairman of the JAC, informed that, the government of Assam has started the illegal road construction inside the Nongwah Mawtamur areas since 1 September 2022 which is continue till date through the areas of Rani including Kynthong Paham, Damu Paham, Umterlet, Pathar Khaiong and via Lukhra which include Gorobhanga, Mawtyngkong, Jalut Rim, Jalut Thymmai up to Mawtamur.
He also expressed, grief concern that, despite the status quo to be maintained by both the states of Assam and Meghalaya, but the Government of Assam has forcefully encroached Nongwah Mawtamur by constructing the road and this has led the people of Mawtamur full of fears.
Shabong also informed that, time and again the police personnel and forest guard of Assam had been threatening the people of Nongwah Mawtamur which led the inhabitants of Nongwah Mawtamur are living in fears, in which the Hima of Sohiong has demanded the authority concern of the state government of Meghalaya to take immediate action against the construction of road and illegal encroachment by Assam Government in the mentioned areas and to provide safe and security to the people of Nongwah Mawtamur at large.
