HEADLINES

Shillong, September 07: The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Kongkal Sangma has again upheld his stand after trucks were caught illegally transporting coal and said that the present Government is the most stringent when it comes to illegal activities.

He said that there are many levels of surveillance to prevent illegal trade of coal and added that anything that is to be done should be as per provisions of the law and with proper documents, and the Government has also penalised many who have been involved in illegal activities, and there is no such understanding when it comes to illegal coal trade.

He said that even with the most stringent restrictions there will always be people who will try to illegally do things, but thousands of trucks have been caught and many have been arrested and added that if the Government catches those breaking the law, it takes stern action on them.

The Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) on Tuesday night held a check and search operation at parts of Mawryngkneng area to catch the trucks which are illegally transporting coal, and in this operation which continued throughout the night, more than 50 trucks were caught, however FIR was filed only for 18 trucks as the majority of the trucks managed to escape.
