SHILLONG, July 21: RTI activist Disparsing Rani said the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) is one department which will sink deep like the Titanic due to the ongoing rampant corruption in the department.

He informed that as per the RTI report, Satnam Global Infraprojects Limited which was tasked to put into effect the Saubhagya Scheme by installing smart meters in Meghalaya has sought fake certificates from about 25,000 households in order to produce the utilisation certificates so that they can claim Rs.2 crores from the Asian Development Bank.

He said with this kind of corruption as found and revealed, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHAvQMSiCKMthe MeECL will eventually sink, and the question that arises now is why have the funds received from the Bank been made to disappear only for the people to bear the burden of paying off the loan in the end.

On the other hand, Rani also informed that through the RTI, it was also found that there are 3376 vacancies in the MeECL department and the problem is that out of these vacancies, the unfilled vacancies till now are 2320 in total, to which Rani also posed a question as to how this department has been functioning without employees being appointed in the vacant positions.
