Nongpoh : The Patharkhmah Model Degree College building is already showing signs of wear and tear after only one year of it having been built, and due to these signs, a criticism has arisen with regards to this educational institution in Ri-Bhoi District.
After pictures of the college went viral in social media, news correspondents went to the site in which they also found that the road leading to this college is not at all motorable and is filled with potholes and to reach the college, they had to walk for about half an hour.
As per the tender floated, there was a provision for a lift to be installed in the building but due to unknown reasons, the part where the lift was supposed to be attached has been left incomplete and barricaded with bamboo sticks. With it being left abandoned, some kids also went to the place and broke the window panes. Apart from that the electricity connection and water supply was also not yet connected to the college and the two hostels.
On the 30th of August, 2020, the Minister in-charge of the Department of Education in Meghalaya, Lahkmen Rymbui had tweeted that this college will be inaugurated this year, but this plan may not work at all if the overseeing authority cannot take charge and pursue the matter.
It may be pointed that the foundation stone for the college and the hostels was laid virtually by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi on the 3rd of February, 2019 in the presence also of the Jirang MLA, Sosthenos Sohtun and other government officials held at the Office of the then Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi District.
The building was constructed at a cost of Rs.11.01 crores under the Superintendent of the State Project Directorate Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), Shillong.
