SHILLONG, June 07 : The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Kongkal Sangma said that no illegal coke plant is functioning in Meghalaya because all the illegal coke plants have been shut down with no means for any other illegal coke plant to be established.
The Chief Minister said this while responding to a query on the demands echoed by many to shut down coke plants in commemoration of the World Environment Day which was held recently.
Sangma said that the Government does not want the environment to be affected and neither does he want the economy to be affected, while expressing that it is truly difficult, and for this reason, regulations have been specified for those intending to establish factories.
He said that as it at present in Meghalaya, all illegal coke plants have been directed to shut down and the ones in operation still are only those with proper documents as per regulations specified.
The Chief Minister said that presently no illegal coke plant is operating in Meghalaya, and second is to bring new processes into operation which can protect the environment whilst operation and at the same time to also open up avenues for employment.
