Disgruntled NEHU students march down to the VC’s office to demand his resignation

SHILLONG,June 02: The students of North-Eastern Hill University under the lead of the NEHU Students’ Union(NEHUSU) today the Thursday of the week held an intense protest at the premise of the University. In this protest hundreds of students participated in a public rally till the office of the Vice Chancellor to demand that he step down from his position due to his inability in meeting the demands of the students.

The protest of the students forced the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla to come out and listen to the demands of the students for which an appeal had also already been submitted. The foremost demand of the NEHUSU is to fill the teaching faculty vacancies which have been left vacant for a long time.

On this matter Prof.Shukla clarified that it is not easy to recruit teachers in one day while informing the students that the call for applications through advertisements to fill the vacancies has already progressed.

With regards to the recruitment of Associate Professors and Assistant Professors, the students have refused to accept teachers appointed on a contractual basis and demanded for full-time permanent teachers.

The students also shouted in unison that if the Vice Chancellor cannot fulfill the demands of the NEHUSU then he should resign and step down as VC.

The other demands that the students in NEHU have put forward include meeting all the necessary requirements of the students from buses,hostels, water and electricity.
