Weather blamed for sunken bridge in Mawlai Bypass

SHILLONG, May 19: The Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya who is also incharge of the PWD(Roads), Prestone Tynsong said that the sinking of the Mawlai Bypass road is due to the weather force of nature, and it was unimaginable because it also brought about a lot of destruction in many parts of the State.

He said that the bridge constructed at Mawlai Bypass is a very strong built bridge, but due to the strong pressure of the water the bridge has been affected, while also informing that he has directed the engineers to do the needful so that the road can be opened for use again at the earliest.

On being asked about the absence of side drains, he said that the department has the intention to repair the road again during which all the necessary requirements will be provided and the budget estimate has been directed to be prepared for making the road a two-lane road.

With regards to the roads being damaged all over the State, Prestone Tynsong said that till now the department has not received all the information on the level of the damages to the roads and bridges due to the incessant heavy rain, but he said that when it comes to the damages,the information should be forwarded immediately to the Office of the Deputy Commissioner for a complaint to be registered, after that an inspection will be conducted and a budget estimate for the repair of the road will be given.

On being queried further, he said that it is impossible to safeguard anything from the forces of nature, but preparations have to be made for any unforeseen event so that action can be taken sooner to avoid disruption in commuting.
