HEADLINES

SHILLONG, April 20: The People’s Democratic Front (PDF), a coalition partner in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) Government led by the NPP,has expressed that it does not at all agree to Hindi being made a compulsory subject till Class-X.

The President of the PDF, Banteidor Lyngdoh said that even though the party is a partner in the Government, it has decided to oppose and not accept Hindi as a compulsory subject for studies till Class-X.

It may be reminded that recently the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah informed that all the States in the North-East region have agreed to include Hindi as a compulsory subject till Class-X.

He said that in the meeting with the CEC of the PDF which was held recently, they decided that they cannot at all accept this because if the local mother tongue is diminished and extinct then the community will also be diminished and extinct.

On the other hand, he said that it is good to know and speak many languages because when one has to travel to other states and if one knows the languages spoken in those states, then it becomes very easy, but PDF also wants the Khasi language to grow and thrive and for the Indian Government to include the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule the Constitution.
