SHILLONG, April 04: The Deputy Chief Minister incharge of the Department of Power, Prestone Tynsong said that the State has to pay upto Rs.120 crores per year as per the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed with the NTPC in the year 2007 for power of upto 87 MW.

He said that due to excess of power prices for each unit, the State Government from the year 2015-16 has not bought any power from the NTPC but it has to pay a fix charge which is Rs.120 crores.

The Deputy Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to the Indian Government for the notification from the Power Ministry to release upto 53 MW from the State to the Tamil Nadu Government for 5 years, while stating that this was possible to be removed with the task being undertaken also by the North Eastern Regional Power Committee, and said further that for about 34 MW more, the State Government is speaking with the Central Government to be released.

He said that the North Eastern Regional Power Committee (NERPC) is group of Power Ministers from the North Eastern states, and it is through this group of Ministers that pressure could be added on the Indian Government to free Meghalaya from making unnecessary payments to the NTPC.
