Minister awaits report from DC on oppoSHILLONG, January 19: The Urban Affairs and Municipal Minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar said that he is currently awaiting the report from the Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi on the opposition of the local public of Kyrdem over the proposed landfill to be instated in Mawlawai, Ri-Bhoi.
It may be reminded that the local public of Kyrdem, Mawlawai and Sohriewblei on Wednesday last week had come out in full strength to oppose the intention to instate the landfill or Solid Waste Management project in the boundary of Mawlawai and Kyrdem village.
With regard to this opposition of the local public, the Minister said that at present he cannot comment on it but he will have to wait for the full report to be submitted by the Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi District.
The search for a new landfill location from the Government’s end has been moving ahead and the Minister has said that at present the Government will not rush anything but will move the process step by step and will try to complete it in due course of time.
On being asked about the opposition of the public with regard to instating a landfill, the Minister said that the question and reason should be asked from the public opposing it for as a
Minister he cannot say anything yet since he is awaiting the full report from the DC.
But as it had been seen last week, the coming out of the public is on the basis of that a majority of the public from the three villages had no knowledge on the proposed intention and they had also alleged the former and new Headmen of Kyrdem of issuing the No Objection Certificate discreetly without announcing or making the public know about it.
