In a shocking incident highlighting rising crime in local markets, an 80-year-old man was robbed at Nongstoiñ market on Saturday morning.
The victim, identified as Slar Hoojon of Rngikseh village, Eastern West Khasi Hills District, had gone to buy meat at around 10:30 am when an unidentified miscreant suddenly attacked him and snatched his money, amounting to ₹1,400.
According to eyewitness accounts, the elderly man attempted to resist but was overpowered due to his age. He was pushed into a nearby drain, leaving him bruised and with torn clothes.
Local residents expressed concern over the deteriorating law-and-order situation at the market, alleging that certain sections of Nongstoiñ have increasingly become hideouts for miscreants, pickpockets, and drug peddlers. Vendors also complained that once darkness sets in, many are forced to close their stalls early out of fear of such elements.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter policing and better security in and around the market area to ensure safety for traders, customers, and especially senior citizens.
