Shillong, – Dr. Ricky Andrew J Syngkon, Member of Parliament representing the Shillong constituency, has stated that the Voice of the People Party’s (VPP) recent electoral success—winning 32 out of 36 constituencies in the Khasi-Jaintia region—delivers a powerful message to the government. Despite having only four MLAs in the 60-member state assembly, the VPP’s performance reflects the public’s desire for change, he asserted.
Responding to criticisms that VPP MLAs are unable to bring development to their constituencies, Dr. Ricky emphasized the responsibility of the state government to acknowledge and act upon the people’s mandate. “If the government is truly accountable, it will recognize that winning 32 out of 36 constituencies is a clear signal that the public is dissatisfied and eager for change. Should those in power fail to understand this, the people will respond accordingly,” he said.
Addressing the postponement of the District Council elections for the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), Dr. Ricky questioned the government’s rationale. He argued that constituency delimitation should not interfere with the election schedule. “There may be underlying motives among those in power to use the redrawing of constituencies as an excuse to delay the elections. The VPP believes that the government’s actions are inappropriate, and such delays are unacceptable to the public,” he stated.
Regarding central government schemes, the Shillong MP highlighted the challenges these programs face in the northeastern region due to its unique geographical features, including hilly terrains and rivers. He mentioned that he has communicated with Union ministers about the risks of implementing schemes without understanding local conditions. “It’s dangerous to introduce initiatives from the top down without knowing what’s beneath the surface,” Dr. Ricky cautioned.
