SHILLONG, March 08: The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) MLA from Mawsynram, Himalaya M.Shangpliang expressed his concern with regard to the lack of a proper site for the disposal of the solid waste from Ïawmusiang,Jowai, by also presenting photographs of the same in the Budget Session on Tuesday.
He said that the piling of garbage will also affect the health of the residents, while urging the Government to take due notice by providing a site for the disposal of solid waste. He said that the Urban Affairs of the State should have looked into the operations of the Jowai Municipal Board (JMB) especially for the sanitation in Jowai city.
The leader of the Opposition and also MLA of the Trinamool Congress, Dr.Mukul Sangma said that the Government should have looked at existing means to alleviate the problem, especially those which are as per modern technology.
He said that for this matter, funds are no doubt required, however the will to do is also required, and as it appears now, there is no will at all. He said that such incidents can also pose problems for the MLA who may lose in the election if he cannot alleviate this problem.
Responding to the short duration discussion, the Minister incharge of the Department of Urban Affairs, Sniawbhalang Dhar said that while the department is waiting and searching for proper sites for solid waste disposal, three sites have been identified as temporary solid waste disposal sites,one in Mookhep and the others in Myntriang and Shiliang Myntang. The Minister said that there are several requirements to be fulfilled for the procurement of a proper site for solid waste disposal.
On the matter of garbage still left uncleared till now, Dhar said that the department will process the task of clearing the piling garbage in Jowai city.
