Shillong: The District Magistrate of South West Garo Hills has prohibited the sale of petrol and diesel in jerry cans, bottles and other containers with immediate effect to prevent possible law and order issues.
In an order issued by District Magistrate Anendya Raajsshre, the restriction comes in view of the escalating tension reported in parts of West Garo Hills related to the upcoming election to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), scheduled for April 10, 2026.
The order states that the measure has been taken to prevent any disruption of law and order and to ensure the safety and security of the public in the district.
Issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, the directive will remain in force until further orders. It strictly prohibits the sale of petrol and diesel in jerry cans, bottles and other containers as governed under the Petroleum Act, 1934 and the Petroleum Rules, 1976.
The order further warned that anyone violating the directive will face legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and other relevant provisions of law.
However, the supply of diesel for mobile towers and road construction companies will continue as per the standing order of the Deputy Commissioner (Supply).
