Conrad K Sangma on Monday announced the postponement of the Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET) 2026, which was scheduled to be held on May 29, following appeals from teachers engaged in Census and Special Intensive Revision (SIR) duties.
Speaking at a public programme in Damas, North Garo Hills, the Chief Minister said teachers had expressed concerns over balancing classroom responsibilities, Census work, and SIR assignments while preparing for the examination.
“The teachers are worried and in a dilemma due to multiple responsibilities,” Sangma said, assuring that the government would review the situation and announce a suitable new date to allow adequate preparation time.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the broader challenges in Meghalaya’s education sector, acknowledging that while the state has expanded school infrastructure and educational institutions, improving the quality of education remains a priority.
Sangma praised teachers for their dedication despite systemic challenges and stressed that improving educational standards would require collective efforts from the government, teachers, parents, and all stakeholders.
