Ride To Serve Group Halts Operations After Fines Imposed by DTO Officials

HEADLINES

The Ride To Serve group, comprising two-wheeler taxi operators in Shillong, has announced a temporary halt in their operations, citing harassment by District Transport Office (DTO) officials. The group claims that the inspections and fines, reportedly up to ₹10,000, were carried out under directives from state government ministers.

Speaking to the media, Ride To Serve convener K. Nongkynrih expressed the group’s dissatisfaction with the DTO’s actions, urging authorities to stop imposing fines on two-wheeler taxi drivers. The group plans to cease operations until a resolution is reached after a scheduled meeting with the Transport Commissioner.

The operators have also raised concerns over the delay in granting individual permits, which they have been seeking for over two years. Despite their efforts to comply with the law and register for permits, they allege that the government has been unresponsive, leaving them in a state of uncertainty.

Nongkynrih emphasized that while the group acknowledges they are operating without proper licenses, they are eager to register and gain legal recognition, but government delays have pushed them to this point.
